Lord of the Logos

May 25, 2010

New at a store, 'Lord of the Logos', is a collection of work by Christophe Szpajdel, an artist whose fans in the underground black metal community worship him as the Lord of the Logos.

Although we are not into the whole worship Satan, burn a church and smear pig blood on your face type thing, we can appreciate the amazing artwork in the book and the inspiration for the various logos created by Christophe.

Many of us have, at least one time in their life, owned a heavy metal band tee or album and although you wont find the likes of Guns n Roses, AC/DC or Megadeth in here, you will most certainly remember that the art work for most heavy metal bands was one of the things that first got your attention.

Check it out now at a store and online soon.

Bicycle Portraits

May 5, 2010

Our friend Stan Engelbrecht, of African Salad and Miss Beautiful fame, just sent us a link to his new project Bicycle Portraits.

Stan and his friend Nic Grobelar have spent most of this year photographing the broad spectrum of South African's that ride bicycles to work and documenting the reasons why they love bicycles, why they ride bicycles and why in an age when climate change is a very serious threat, many of us choose not to use this mode of transport.

The project is on kickstarter and the guys are hoping to raise enough pledges to fund the production. This will also allow the duo to travel around South Africa so that they can further document other bicycle lovers and ultimately publish their work. We are keeping our thumbs crossed for this one!

Here are few examples of the pics followed by a video.

The Facehunter Show

May 3, 2010

Stylish, Insightful, hysterical, sexy and cool, are just a few of the words you can use to sum up the Facehunter Show. Off the back of his now legendary style blog 'Facehunter', this mini online show moves effortlessly around the globe providing us with a glimpse into the many levels of our creative cultures. Its well balanced approach that sits perfectly between Bruno style (although this guy is truly stylish) craziness and conventional interviewing, leaves you wondering whether some of his subjects are for real.

Hi-fashion, street fashion, art and music all get a say here. From encounters with the uber famous to interviews with cult fashion brand owners and never before heard of bands, it's all good on this show.

Coachella is the latest episode, followed by a couple of our favourites below. We will definitely be posting new episodes moving forward.

The first copies of the Facehunter book are in this week, so watch this space.

All Gone '09

Feb 14, 2010

Ever since we opened our doors, the All Gone book has been that one book we just cannot seem to get on our shelves. Released by LaMJC, the book is the be-all and end-all of limited edition items and street culture products from the past year.

Unfortunately it is in such demand(limited to 1000 copies and already sold out) that unless, for instance, you have a friend, who took a photo, which happened to be in the book and he got sent a free copy of the book and he gives it to your girlfriend, to give to you ,because he knows you will cherish it so, chances are you will never get it.

Well would you believe it, we at a store have just that friend. His name is Henrik Purienne. He is a photographic genius, lover of all things good and our new best friend. For those of you who would like to take a look inside , All Gone 09 will be on show at our Kloof Street branch until the end of the month.

The Sartorialist book

Sep 7, 2009

Sartorialist

After fifteen years in the fashion business, Scott Schuman felt a growing disconnect between what he saw on the runways and in magazines, and what real people were wearing. The Sartorialist was his attempt to redress the balance. Since its beginning, the blog has become hugely admired and influential in the fashion industry and beyond.

Sartorialist

His now-famous and much-loved blog, thesartorialist.com, is his showcase for the wonderful and varied sartorial tastes of real people across the globe. This book is a beautiful anthology of Scott’s favorite images, accompanied by his insightful commentary. It includes photographs of well-known fashion figures alongside people encountered on the street whose personal style and taste demand a closer look.

The Sartorialist will be available at a store in the next few days.

Raving 89

Aug 31, 2009

The year '89 is best remembered for the fall of the Berlin wall. It was also the year that "Acid House" was renamed "Rave" and a revolution of another kind took place. Raving became synonymous with grubby wharehouse parties, lasers, smiles, electronic music and er dungarees. It was also the time when Ecstasy become the drug of choice and people who would otherwise never mix, partied together in happy mayhem.

Hardly anyone remembered to take a camera to these raves. Gavin Watson did and he has captured this experience in his new book Raving '89. A collection of photographs and captions that take the reader back to this special moment in clubbing history.

Coming to a store soon. Until then download a sneak preview
