Back in the 90′s when hip hop was good, a band called Digable Planets released an iconic track called “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” Its since gone on to become one of the greatest songs of Hip Hop.

Move forward to the present and Shabazz Palaces is the new brainchild of former DP frontman, “Butterfly” or now known as “Palaceer Lazaro”. Quirky names aside, this guy has always pushed the boundaries of a genre that has in recent times become bogged down by the dreaded MTV and its watered down versions of past iconic hip hop artists. Their 2011 album “Black Up” is a must for anyone longing for something fresh, credible and erm, wierd in the hip hop world.

Cue the entry of Shabazz Palaces. They have restored my belief that hip hop isn’t about sitting on a throne, swaggin in Paris and doing collabs with Guetta.
